Mediterranean Diet May Help Reduce Risk of Developing Alzheimer’s

This isn’t the first time that a study has been done on the health benefits of following a Mediterranean-style diet. Many other studies have shown that, on average, people living in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and Greece are often associated with having less degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s, strokes, and aneurysms than people living in other Western countries.

According to the study, a diet rich in tomatoes, nuts, olive oil, fish, cruciferous vegetables, dark and green leafy vegetables, fruits, and poultry may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by around 40%.

I’m not surprised…especially when you consider that the lack of trans-fats in this diet also contributes to a drop in the average waist size and ‘bad’ cholesterol levels of the people living in these regions compared to their counterparts across the Atlantic.

America is one of the worst countries as far as obesity is concerned with junk food and additive-laden ‘convenient meals’ taking preference over healthier alternatives (other Western countries are catching up though). The fact that health conditions such as type-2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, and other hypokinetic diseases are all linked to an unhealthy diet, the US healthcare system is being placed under unnecessary strain.

Making better choices when it comes to the food you eat is a great start to help reduce the risk of developing many serious health conditions, as well as improve the overall well-being of you and your family. But remember that even a good diet still doesn’t give you all the nutrients that you need... thus the need to top-up with the likes of our Total Balance and Omega-3 fish oil.

One last comment! It’s easier to get the fresh ingredients needed to make Mediterranean dishes in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean than it is in the cities throughout most of the Western world where the food supply is more industrialized.
